Pupils at St Joseph’s Primary School in Malmesbury took part in a mini marathon challenge on April 25 after being inspired by the achievements of TA and sport coordinator Sarah Bennett.

Sarah, aged 51, is no stranger to running challenges and has completed 15 marathons, four ultra marathons as well as a range of other events.

This year the TA managed to achieve a new personal best of 3:32:09 in the London Marathon on April 23 and described the feeling of elation after  crossing the finishing line.

Sarah said: “Sunday was a fantastic experience! I felt very nervous leading up to the race having put so much work in.

“It was very inspiring and emotional to see so many people running and listening to some of their stories.

“I was able to achieve a new personal best which I’m over the moon with.”

She wanted to find a way to share her love of running with her pupils and came across the mini marathon challenge on the London Marathon website.

Sarah believes that regular physical exercise is extremely important for the children as it kick starts healthy habits that can continue into adulthood.

The day started off with a brief assembly then each class took it in turns to jog a mile around the playground.

They managed to collect £260 cash donations for The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, a charity the school regularly raises money for.

Head teacher Sue Woods said: “Our whole school has had a wonderful time taking part in the mini-marathon.

“It was fantastic to hear about Mrs Bennett’s successful achievement in the London Marathon on Sunday, and this was truly inspirational for the children.

“Our Year 6 Sports Captains, encouraged all the younger children and indeed the whole school community was supporting each other.

“I am so proud of all the children and staff, we all had a fantastic day.

“Huge congratulations to Mrs Bennett for her amazing personal best in the London Marathon on Sunday and thank you for arranging this for our school community.”
